BASICS

In addition to routine GP care all the doctors are trained BASICS-Scotland GPs and we are frequently called by the ambulance service to respond to medical emergencies, serious injuries, road accidents etc.

BASICS is an organisation set up to train doctors, nurses and paramedics in the additional skills needed to treat critically ill or injured patients before they reach hospital.

In Scotland we are also fortunate to have the Sandpiper trust – a charity which supplies a large amount of life saving equipment to BASICS responders. This includes resuscitation equipment and vehicle locators which allow the ambulance service to see exactly where a BASICS responder is so that the nearest resources can be identified and directed to the scene of an accident.

BASICS is particularly important in rural areas where people are a long way from hospital and where there are fewer ambulances.
