{"id":1126,"date":"2026-08-03T21:17:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T20:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/surgeryweb-scot.org.uk\/55874\/?page_id=1126"},"modified":"2026-08-03T21:17:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T20:17:15","slug":"fractional-exhaled-nitric-oxide-feno-test","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/surgeryweb-scot.org.uk\/55874\/fractional-exhaled-nitric-oxide-feno-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is a FeNO Test?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your airway tubes can become inflamed in asthma, and this produces a chemical called nitric oxide.<\/li>\n<li>The FeNO test measures how much nitric oxide is in your breath when you breathe out and helps us understand how much inflammation you have in your lungs.<\/li>\n<li>The test may help to diagnose asthma or to see how well treatments are working.<\/li>\n<li>FeNO can be high for other reasons (e.g. hay fever) and is not high in all types of asthma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What should I avoid prior to the test?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several things can affect the results of the FeNO Test.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 hours before &#8211; Avoid alcohol consumption<\/li>\n<li>12 hours before &#8211; Avoid smoking<\/li>\n<li>12 hours before &#8211; Avoid foods high in nitrates such as rocket, green beans, spinach, leek, spring onion, radish, cucumber, carrot, beetroot, Chinese cabbage, potato, turnips, garlic, cabbage, sweet pepper, green pepper.<\/li>\n<li>6 hours before DO NOT use your preventer inhaler (containing inhaled steroid)<\/li>\n<li>1 hour before &#8211; Avoid eating, exercise and using your inhalers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What happens during a FeNO test?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can sit down for the test and first youwill be asked to take a deep breath in with your mouth open then breathe out slowly and steadily into the mouthpiece for about 10 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>the test is easy to do but you may need to do it more than once to get a result.<\/li>\n<li>The test usually takes less than 5 minutes to perform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a FeNO Test?
